As AI becomes more common in the classroom, students will use it to complete their assignments and become uncertain about how teachers will deal with it. Last year, an AI platform called Mathgpt.ai aimed to provide university students with “preventing seduction” private tutors and provide educational assistants to professors.

Following the success of pilot programs at 30 US colleges and universities, Mathgpt.ai is preparing to nearly double its availability this fall, with hundreds of instructors planning to incorporate the tool. Schools that run Mathgpt.ai in classrooms include Pennsylvania State University, Tufts University, and Liberty University.

The most notable aspect of the platform is that AI chatbots are trained to never give answers directly, but instead ask student questions and provide support, just like human tutors. Known as Socrates’ questions, this technique encourages students to think critically, rather than memorizing the answers.

For instructors, Mathgpt.ai acts as a teaching assistant, generating questions and studies based on uploaded textbooks and study materials, providing automatic gradient and additional AI capabilities.

Mathgpt.ai supports university-level mathematics, including algebra, calculus, trigonometry and more.

In addition to the extension, Mathgpt.ai has launched an upgraded version of the platform, introducing new features that give students more control over how they use the tools.

The main feature that distinguishes Mathgpt.ai from other AI companies is its instructor-centric approach. Recently, the platform has focused more on instructor needs. For example, instructors can now determine when students are allowed to interact with chatbots. They can specify whether AI encourages students to work independently, whilst providing individualized guidance support for specific tasks.

Another new feature allows professors to set the number of attempts students have to answer questions correctly. To promote a low-pressure learning environment, Mathgpt.ai also introduced unlimited practice questions for students. These questions do not affect scores and allow students to test their knowledge without emphasizing grades.

Additional features that Mathgpt.ai offers instructors include optional requirements for students to upload images of their works. This allows the professor to review the submissions and verify the reliability of the student’s work.

Other recent updates include integration with the three largest learning management systems (LMS). Canvas, Blackboard, and Brightspace. Additionally, screen reader compatibility and audio modes have been added, making it more accessible to individuals with disabilities. The platform already offers closed captions for the summarized video lessons. This is especially narrative to AI to make it sound like historical figures like Ben Franklin and Albert Einstein.

The company claims it is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Chatbots like Meta AI, Character.ai and ChatGpt have faced criticism for inappropriate interactions with younger users, but Mathgpt.ai says strict guardrails are in place to ensure a safe learning environment.

“It won’t discuss with you about your girlfriend, boyfriend, or the meaning of life,” Peter Relan, chairman of Mathgpt.ai, told TechCrunch. “It’s just not involved, because these independent chatbots go in that direction. We’re not here to entertain these kinds of conversations.” (Relan incubated to get AI and was an early discord investor.)

It is important to note that, like any chatbot, Mathgpt.ai assistants can still create inaccurate information. The chatbot has a disclosure at the bottom that warns that AI can make mistakes. Users can report their answers to the company if they believe that the question was answered incorrectly.

“If you find a mistake, we will reward you with a gift card that will tell you what it is. A year, there were five. [hallucinations]. In my second year, there was one. so far [this year]none. Mathgpt.ai has a team of human annotators to revisit all of their work, textbooks and all other content to ensure “100% accuracy,” Relan said.

To continue growing, the company plans to develop mobile apps in the future and expand it to more subjects such as chemistry, economics, accounting and more.

Mathgpt.ai offers free options and course options of $25 per person. Paid options include several benefits, including unlimited AI allocation and LMS integration.
