Meta launches “Vibes”.

In a move no one wanted, Meta is introducing a new feed called “Vibe” in Meta AI app and Meta.AI to share and create AI-generated videos. Think of Tiktok or Instagram reels. But every video I encounter is essentially an AI slop.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the deployment of Vibes in an Instagram post featuring a series of AI-generated videos. In one video, a group of creatures that look vague pops out from one fuzzy cube to another. In other cases, the cat kneads the dough. The third video shows what appears to be an ancient Egyptian woman taking a selfie on a balcony overlooking ancient Egypt.

According to Meta, when you browse a new feed, you will see videos generated by AI from both creators and others. Over time, the meta algorithms begin to display personalized content.

You have the option to generate a video from scratch or remix the video that appears in your feed. Before publishing, you can add new visuals, add music layers, and adjust the style. You can then post videos directly to Vibes Feed, DM others, or cross-post them on Instagram and Facebook stories and reels.

Meta’s AI Head Alexandr Wang shared in a post that the company is partnering with AI image generators Midjourney and Black Forest Labs for early versions of Vibes, Meta continues to develop its own AI models.

No one really wants a generated version of Tiktok’s AI, so user comments in response to Zuckerberg’s announcement were about what you expect. The top comment on the post reads, “No one gang wants this,” but another popular comment states: Another comment was, “When I say, I think I’ll talk for everyone: What…?”

New feeds may not be welcomed by users, especially as the rise of AI technology has made social media platforms flooded with AI slops. The issue is so widespread that companies like YouTube are now considering cracking down on the issue. This makes the meta movement particularly inexplicable. This says the company is working on “original” Facebook content earlier this year, and advises creators that they need to focus on “real storytelling.”

The launch of the new feed comes as Meta has recently invested heavily in revamping its AI efforts amid concerns that it has fallen behind its competitors such as Openai, Anthropic and Google Deepmind.

In June, the company restructured its AI efforts to establish an AI division called “Meta Superintelligence Labs” following the departure of its well-known staff. Meta reportedly reorganised the AI division into four groups, focusing on basic models, research, product integration and infrastructure.
