Medical sources say six people were killed in Israeli air attacks, as Khan Eunice and six others died in the attack on Beit Hanoon.
Medical sources say at least 30 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli attack. This is because Israeli forces said they deployed ground forces in the so-called “security corridor” south of the territory.
At least six people were killed in the air raid at Khan Eunis in southern Gaza, and six were killed in the attack on Beit Hanoon to the north, medical sources told Al Jazeera.
Israel smashed a few weeks of ceasefire in the war with Hamas in mid-March, pushing to seize more territory in Gaza as it resumed artillery fires on its devastated territory.
Israel has since stepped up its attacks and says it will continue to escalate until the Israeli prisoners seized on October 7, 2023 release Israeli prisoners seized in the attack on Southern Israel.
Israeli forces have been deployed in the newly established security corridor in southern Gaza, the military said on Saturday.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a new “Morag Corridor” and proposed to cut off cities in southern Rafa, where Israel ordered orders to force evacuate from other parts of Gaza.
It was not immediately clear how many forces had been unfolded, or where exactly the new corridor would be.
Morag is the name of the Jewish settlement that once stood between Rafa and Khan Yunis, and Netanyahu had suggested it would run between cities.
Maps issued by Israeli media showed corridors driving narrow coastal belts from east to west.
Earlier on Saturday, Hamas’ armed wings released a video showing two Israeli prisoners alive in Gaza, speaking to cameras and explaining how they survived the alleged Israeli strike.
The Israeli campaign group, hostage and missing family forum, has issued a statement confirming that Maxim Helkin’s family has identified him as one of the two prisoners of war featured on the video. Herkin’s family urged the media not to publish the video.
Israeli media named the second prisoner of war as Israeli soldier Burke Perstein.
According to an Al Jazeera tally based on Israeli statistics, the two men were taken from the Nova Music Festival and killed at least 1,139 people in a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7th.
Fifty-eight prisoners remain in Gaza, including 34, who say Israeli forces are dead.
In a six-week ceasefire that ended with Israel’s resuming air attacks in Gaza on March 18, the fighters handed over 33 prisoners, of which eight were killed.
Israel’s military response to the October 7 attack killed at least 50,669 people in Gaza, the majority of them, their civilians, according to figures from the territorial health ministry, which the United Nations consider reliable.
The UN said at least 100 children have been killed or injured every day in Gaza since the strike resumed.
“There is nothing justifying the murder of a child,” Philip Lazarini, head of the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA), posted on X on Saturday.
Trilateral meeting
As part of a diplomatic effort to a ceasefire in Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that he will hold a trilateral summit on the situation in Gaza between Egyptian President Abdel Fatta al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah.
“In response to the Gaza emergency, we will hold a trilateral summit with the Egyptian president and the King of Jordan when we visit Egypt on the invitation of President Al-Sisi,” Macron wrote in X ahead of the trip.
The French president is expected in Cairo on Sunday evening and will hold a meeting with his Egyptian counterparts on Monday morning.
According to Macron’s office, the Trilateral Summit will take place on the same day in Egypt’s capital.
On Tuesday, Macron will visit Egypt’s El Arish Port, 50km (30 miles) west of Gaza, meeting humanitarians and security guards to demonstrate “continuous mobilization in favour of a ceasefire.”
El Arish is a transportation point for international aid for Gaza.
