One of the largest universities in the strip, Gaza University Islamic University in Gaza city, had around 17,000 students before the war, studying everything from medicine and chemistry to literature and commerce. Over 60% of students were women.
But now it feels like the place is once a university is gone.
After 18 months of Israel’s bombing, the main auditorium is a wreck that has burned out violently after killing more than 50,000 people in the enclave. The giant hole is blown up through a blackened wall. The banks of the seats are broken and twisted.
Since Israel broke the ceasefire on March 18th and resumed the war, the campus has become a shelter for hundreds of families in northern Gaza.
The family set up tents in the auditorium and classrooms. They take books from the library and burn them in a cooking fire because they don’t have fuel. Children run around in the gardens, running to fields of debris and earth mounds.
A makeshift market is set up below the archway at the main gate.
Their struggle to survive has worsened as Israel invaded Gaza for more than a month, robbing the limited supply of aid agencies on which almost the entire population relies.
