North Carolina Senate Republicans choose Lee as the next majority leader

RAILY, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Senate Republicans chose a new majority leader on Tuesday to promote the veteran lawmakers who won a veteran lawmaker.

According to a news release, the Caucus has elected the post in praise of Sen. Michael Lee of New Hanover County. Lee takes over Senator Paul Newton He resigned from the Senate last week. He became the general counsel at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

“It’s an honor to have the support and trust of my colleagues,” Lee said in the release.

The majority leader is considered prime minister of Protempor Pelfilberger, the GOP Senate Speaker, the first leader of the Chamber of Commerce. The majority leaders are hosting the Caucus Conference, where GOP Senators discuss policy issues and votes. Once Newton’s successor is appointed in the Senate, Republicans will once again hold 30 of the 50 seats.

“Michael works every day to do his best for his constituents,” Berger said. “He is someone all Senators, Republicans or Democrats, can seek advice and guidance.”

Lee, a lawyer, was first appointed to the Senate in 2014 to fill the vacant seats. He lost his seat for former Wilmington mayor Harper Peterson in the 2018 election, but only to frame Peterson two years later to regain it. Lee started working as one of them. Chairman of the Top Budget Committee Since 2023, he will continue his job while still in the majority leader.

Lee was a key advocate for the law. Expanded use of taxpayer funds For K-12 students to attend private schools. This year he shepherd bills that would prevent public schools from promoting certain diversity, equity and inclusion practices in classroom instruction and teacher training.

Lee has been seen as a modest voice among Republicans on some issues. In the discussion of the new abortion restrictions at the General Assembly, Lee publicly explained his opposition to the ban during the first pregnancy. The law was finally enacted in 2023.
