Dutch and US authorities have announced that they have used fraudulent identity documents to cybercriminals around the world to demolish illegal markets called Veriftools.
To do this, two marketplace domains (Verif)[.]Tools and Veriftools[.]Net) and one blog have been deleted and redirected to a splash page where visitors to the site say it was done by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in accordance with a warrant issued by the US District Court. The server was seized in Amsterdam.
However, a telegram message posted by the operator on August 28, 2025 indicates that they have already started service on “Veriftools” on their domain[.]com. “The domain was created per domainools on December 10, 2018. It is currently unknown who the platform administrator is.
“Veriftools operators have bypassed the license, passport, and identity verification system for counterfeit drivers and created and sold other identification documents that can be used to gain unauthorized access to online accounts,” the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said Thursday.
DOJ said it began investigating its services in 2022 after the FBI discovered a criminal operation to leverage its stolen identity and access cryptocurrency accounts. The investigation revealed that illegal platforms are being used, generating counterfeit identification documents for all 50 US states and across other foreign countries, for just $9.
The FBI says illegal revenue, which amounts to approximately $6.4 million in illegal revenue, is linked to the Veriftools market.
On the Veriftools website, the operator asserts plausible negativity by stating, “The legal use of the Service is your responsibility. By using the Service, you must be aware of local, state and federal laws of the jurisdiction and be solely responsible for your actions.”
Following The Takedown, Reddit users have sent a message under the name Powda_reaper, where the site owner has sent a message saying “the website is currently down due to a major issue,” claiming that by August 29th they have reverted the site and allowed it to “your funds are safe.”
“The internet is not a shelter for criminals. If you build or sell tools that allow criminals to pretend to be victims, you’re part of the crime,” said U.S. lawyer Ryan Ellison. “We use all legal tools to disrupt the business, remove profits, and bring you to justice. There’s no bigger surgery than us.”
In a coordinated statement, the Dutch National Police described Veriftools as one of the largest providers of false identity documents. In addition to two physical servers, more than 21 virtual servers have been confiscated.
Authorities also noted that the entire website-wide infrastructure on the server was protected and copied for subsequent analysis. In the Netherlands, each forged falsification, false proof of identity, and forged payment methods has a maximum sentence of six years.
“Many businesses and institutions use what is called customer verification (KYC), which only requires an image of their ID using Veriftools. “Criminals appreciate using platforms like Veriftools because they can commit fraud with documents created, such as bank help desk scams and phishing.”
