New AI tools help farmers reduce the risk of livestock disease

Scientists are developing new tools that use artificial intelligence to provide farmers with rapid, coordinated advice on how to reduce the risk of livestock disease.

The web tool quickly summarises official documents on livestock disease and biosecurity, providing details that are most relevant to the needs of individual farmers at the time.

The AI ​​tool is being developed as part of a project by the Rural University of Scotland (SRUC) and the Moredun Institute.

The effects of livestock disease on farms

Animal diseases can have a significant impact on farms, affecting both the economic and operational aspects of agriculture.

When livestock get sick, it can lead to lower productivity, lower milk and egg production, and even death of animals that directly affect farm profitability. Outbreaks can disrupt breeding programs and lead to long-term issues with herds and herd management.

Furthermore, the cost of treating sick animals, and the implementation of biosecurity measures to prevent spreading disease, can place a significant financial burden on farmers. In some cases, the spread of certain diseases could lead to trade restrictions or market closures, further limiting the farm’s ability to sell products.

Beyond economic losses, livestock diseases can also affect farm reputations, and spreading diseases to other regions and industries can reduce consumer confidence and have potential legal consequences.

Overall, animal diseases significantly disrupt farm operations, creating economic difficulties, increased management complexity, and potentially long-term impacts on both animal and farm businesses.

Use AI to assess individual farm needs

Researchers will quickly demonstrate how to use new AI web tools to search and summarise guidance for reducing the risk of different livestock diseases on farms.

They say industry input is important to ensure that this tool is useful and effective. Farmers are invited to participate in the project and provide feedback.

Dr. Kaitramont, project lead at SRUC, said artificial intelligence tools could make life easier for the agricultural industry.

The new AI can be used to gather the necessary information on how farmers can reduce the risk of livestock disease on their farms in a fast and accessible way.

The farmers can say

“It’s great to hear from farmers who want to know more about it,” Dr. Ramon said.

To help farmers make the most of their new technology, SRUC and Moredun will be holding a webinar on March 26th.
