From “That’s So True” to “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” Gracie Abrams has proven she can write a great breakup song. But now she’s happy and in love with her boyfriend Paul Mescal, but she didn’t know how her songwriting abilities would be affected.
In her Vogue cover story published on Tuesday (June 9), the pop star opened up about her cozy life with the Irish actor, detailing how she learned a different approach to making music while having a stable and balanced relationship in her life. She currently lives in a London home with Mescal, who plays Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles biopic. Their home is full of musical instruments, including a piano that Abrams plays most mornings and a guitar for Mescal, who picked up the instrument for himself and the film.
“[He’s] He’s so much better than he’s ever been,” said Abrams, in awe of Mescal’s guitar skills.
They were based in London while Mescal worked on the Oscar-winning film Hamnet, and the Grammy nominee told the magazine, “I feel like I go home every day and read the greatest book of all time. That’s what it’s like to have a conversation with someone who makes stuff like that.”
At the same time, Abrams said he was “blown away” by the family atmosphere he had with the Normal People star when it came to his art. “I was worried that my sense of security and stability would threaten my desire to write music.”
This interview took place a little more than a month before the release of the musician’s third studio album, Daughter From Hell. Apparently, thanks to the guidance of her longtime collaborator and producer, she was able to return to writing music. “I learned from Aaron [Dessner] It’s okay to dig deeper and refine what you naturally want to do,” she told Vogue.
Instead, “Daughter from Hell,” based on her memories of her turbulent teenage years and the beginnings of conflict with her family, will be released on July 17. On the subject, Abrams reflected, “I wish I could go back in time and spend all the time I spent fighting my mother just listening to every drop of wisdom she had for me.”
“Daughter from Hell” is the follow-up to 2024’s breakout album “The Secret of Us,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The project produced five Billboard Hot 100 hits, including Abrams’ first Top 10 single, “That’s So True,” which peaked at No. 6.
