Olivia Rodrigo says her father cried when he met The Cure’s Robert Smith

If you thought Olivia Rodrigo was a big fan of The Cure, you should meet her father. The pop star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday (June 10) and revealed that she cried lovingly when her father introduced her to Robert Smith for the first time.

“He’s a hardcore superfan,” Rodrigo begins, noting that his father, Chris, was able to speak with Smith backstage at Primavera Sound a few days ago. The Grammy winner said the Barcelona festival was the 30th time her father saw the Cure perform.

“He needed to talk to Robert, because we’re kind of friends now,” she told Kimmel. “And when he first met him, I had never seen him before. My father is a very strict person, you know? He’s like a father, a protector. They looked at each other and tears started to form in his eyes.”

Re-creating the selfie pose of the two men, she added: “He has a picture like that of him and Robert on his phone’s screensaver.”

Also at Primavera, Rodrigo performed a surprise set, during which Smith joined her and debuted their collaboration “What’s Wrong With Me.” The unreleased song will appear on the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series alum’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, which will be released on Friday (June 12).

“Robert has provided the soundtrack to my life for as long as I can remember,” she wrote in a letter to fans shortly after the festival. “He has written some of my favorite songs of all time. His music moves me and inspires me in ways that words cannot express.”

It’s now clear where Rodrigo gets her Cure fandom from, and she’s displaying that badge of honor with the first two singles from the new album. In the lead track, “Drop Dead,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, she references “Just Like Heaven,” and the next song is simply titled “The Cure.”

Regarding the album’s singles, Rodrigo explained to Kimmel a healthy way to choose which tracks to release in advance. “It’s really hard,” she said. “Last Thanksgiving, I was with my family. They live in Wisconsin. It was all of us, including my uncles, aunts, and cousins.”

“I kept the lights pretty dim because I was so shy, and I was so nervous to see their faces when they heard the song for the first time,” she continued. “I played them all, and then we took a vote and we all voted on what we thought the single should be…Everyone liked ‘The Cure’ the most. That was the No. 1 we got.”

“The Cure” was also the song Kimmel performed to the audience after the interview. But before that, she revealed her plans to celebrate the upcoming release of You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

“Unfortunately, I was 17 when this film came out,” she said. “Guts, I was 20. Now I’m 23 and I get really drunk. So I’m really looking forward to it. I’m old enough to do it properly.”
