This week: Olivia Rodrigo releases her long-awaited third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. BTS drops a new song on the streamer that was previously only available on vinyl versions of ARIRANG. And Jack White teases his just-announced new album, Frozen Charlotte, which will be released next month…and much more. Check out all of this week’s picks below.
Olivia Rodrigo, you seem so sad for a girl so in love
After topping the Hot 100 with lead single “Drop Dead” and reaching the top five with second single “The Cure,” Olivia Rodrigo’s third full-length is finally here. You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love delivers on what it promises in its two sections. Namely, songs about being “a girl so in love” (Section 1) and songs where the same narrator seems pretty depressed about it (“You seem so sad” in Section 2). A standout track and third single, “Stupid Song” seems to pull the thread that connects these two feelings: the feeling of being stupid. The book proclaims, “No one wants anyone more,” but as the title suggests, the humor lies in the fact that such big feelings seem pretty silly in hindsight. BTS “Come Over”
In celebration of the 13th BTS Festa, the annual festival for ARMYs, the global icon dropped “Come Over” on the streamer. Previously, this thumping hip-hop heavy track was only available as a bonus on the deluxe edition of the group’s March album ARIRANG. The song was co-written by SUGA, RM, J-Hope, and others, and co-produced by Grammy Award winner Circut with SUGA and Ammo.
Jack White “Dollar Bill”
The rocker returns with a new single from his new album, which was just released on July 10th, following the double-disc set (“GOD And The Broken Ribs” and “Derecho Demonico”) that White released in April and performed as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live. The bluesy “Dollar Bill” opens with a nifty western riff before breaking into classic white. White is at his most at home on any track when he delivers lyrical riddles such as: You owe me/And you’re not mine/Unless I owe you. ”
Bebe Rexha “One Day”
The newly independent pop singer, who partnered with Empire in January after a career with Warner, has released her first album since the move. Titled “Dirty Blonde,” the project primarily delivers high-energy dance-pop bangers, but “One Day” stands out from the rest not only for its mid-tempo production, but also for its candid lyrics, which were primarily co-written by Lexa. And while it’s probably about an ex-lover, it could just as easily be a message to Lexa’s fallen fans: “One day you’ll realize what you’ve lost/By then you’ll be nothing more than an afterthought.” Who needs them?
infinity song, infinity song
Alternative rock sibling band Infinity Song released their self-titled debut album today. This album features the exact type of harmonies and tight writing that can only come from that kind of bond. “We grew up learning music together, playing together, and learning how to listen to each other,” the Boyd brothers said in a statement. “This album gave us the room to rely on our individual strengths while pushing ourselves as musicians…We are proud of how expansive the record became without losing the intimacy that has always been at the heart of Infinity Song.” The album was recorded between the Boyd brothers’ home base of New York and Los Angeles.
