Selena Gomez denies Taylor Swift’s Knicks game comments were ‘insulting’

No, it wasn’t shady when Selena Gomez wrote “lol” in the comments section of a post featuring a photo of Taylor Swift at the NBA Finals.

The singer and actress cleared the air in a message posted to her Instagram Stories on Friday (June 12). Apparently, she “woke up to a bunch of texts saying people were misunderstanding the situation.” “I never insulted my friends and it wasn’t an insult,” Gomez wrote in a quick snap of the view from her bed. “The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page.”

“Second, I bet my friends on this game,” she continued, referring to screenshots of text messages she previously posted with other friends, which some seemed to confuse with her comments on a post about Swift. “I lost, but I was making fun of my opponents and my friends. Believe it or not, I have other friends. But forget right away that most people think otherwise.”

As a reminder to her followers, the Rare Beauty founder added, “Also…this is a basketball game.”

It all started when MTV shared two Instagram snaps of Swift from the New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs game at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday (June 10). The first photo shows the 14-time Grammy Award winner hugging Mariska Hargitay. Hargitay looked exhausted after several hours of barely cheering on the New York team. Meanwhile, a second photo shows Swift jumping excitedly alongside Este Haim.

Gomez simply wrote “lol” in the comment, which some people online interpreted as sarcasm. But if there’s anyone who knows the Murder in the Building star said it in good humor, it’s Swift. Not only because the two women have been best friends for nearly 20 years, but also because the Eras headliner was loud and proud to be rooting for the Knicks in Game 4. Swift, who showed up wearing a goofy “Stevie Nicks” shirt, confidently took part in the raucous celebration after her win at MSG on Wednesday, and was left hoarse at the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony the next day.

“The quality of my speaking voice is a product of two things, and I have no regrets,” Swift said from the podium as she accepted her historic induction. “I was lucky enough to go to the Knicks game last night and I screamed 100 percent. And then I got home and thought, ‘I’m going to stop screaming, I’m shouting too much, I’m shouting instead of talking, I’m too excited.’ And I thought, ‘Okay, I’m not going to scream tonight.'” And then I saw the great performance that I saw tonight, and I just kept screaming. I never stopped screaming, so this is what you get. Again, I make no apologies for that. ”
