Justin Trudeau loves his country, but he also loves his California girls. After missing the World Cup opener in Canada and instead watching the US vs. Paraguay match with Katy Perry, the politician took to social media to explain why.
In a post to X on Saturday (June 13), Trudeau reshared a New York Times article noting his absence from the previous day’s game between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina. “Sometimes I have an obligation to support my boyfriend,” he wrote, hinting that he was needed elsewhere to cheer on his famous girlfriend as she performed at the opening ceremony before Team USA’s kickoff game.
“But you know who I’m rooting for to win the Cup,” the former Canadian prime minister added, along with a Canadian flag emoji.
Perry was one of several A-list artists to sing at the opening ceremony in Inglewood, Calif., on Friday (June 12), performing live for the first time with 10-year-old Norwegian singer Tius Luka for “Wonder” from her album 143. The lineup also included Lisa, Anitta, Tyra, Rema, Future, and Dan + Shay.
In Canada, Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elianna, Jesse Reyes, Michael Bublé and others helped Team Canada kick off the match against Paraguay with unique performances.
The “Fireworks” musician and Prime Minister Trudeau have been dating since last summer. The pair recently made their red carpet debut at the premiere of her Lifetimes Tour Concert Film in Tribeca, with Perry calling her partner “the love of my life” during a Q&A at the screening.
“I’m flying very high,” she said of Prime Minister Trudeau at the time. “Sometimes I just need that support. Having that support finally makes me feel truly whole.”
