More than four years after public attention over her relationship with Harry Styles threw her life into turmoil, Olivia Wilde is opening up about what was going on behind the scenes.

Appearing on Wednesday’s (June 17) episode of Call Her Daddy, the actress and filmmaker spoke about the backlash she faced for dating a British singer after starring in Don’t Worry Darling (2022), which she directed and had a supporting role in. “I’ve never felt so alienated from someone who’s in the public eye,” she said, going on to talk about her personal life in certain tabloids for months on end. “I was like, ‘Who are you talking about? Who is that girl?’

Wilde went on to talk about specific aspects of her romance with Styles, how she was 10 years older than the pop star and how her romance with Styles kept people away from her, even though she wasn’t able to be with her kids half the time anyway due to her custody arrangement with ex-husband Jason Sudeikis. “It was also very strange to see complete fiction being treated like fact,” she told host Alex Cooper. “My personal life was far from anything like that, and was actually very wholesome and sweet.”

“I don’t know how much I understand yet,” she continued. “People were furious. It had a lot to do with the parasocial relationships that people have.” [Styles]. He carries it with grace. I think that’s a big responsibility that all stars have to shoulder. ”

“As if [our] “The happy thing pissed them off. I was going to his shows and dancing, and people were like, ‘Oh, how can you have a girlfriend?'” she added.

Wilde and Styles dated for about two years before announcing their split in late 2022, a few months after Don’t Worry Darling hit theaters. Other than a few paparazzi photos of them holding hands and Wilde attending Styles’ Love on Tour show, their relationship has remained largely private.

However, both referred to the “cruelty” faced by Wilde in Styles’ 2022 Rolling Stone cover story, with the Grammy winner saying, “It’s definitely a difficult feeling to feel like approaching me means you’re holding me to ransom in a corner of Twitter or something.”

“What I don’t understand about the cruelty you’re referring to is that that kind of toxic negativity is the antithesis of Harry and everything he puts out there,” Wilde told the publication at the time. “Personally, I don’t think that hateful energy defines his fan base at all.”

Years later, the Booksmart director still has nothing but kind things to say about his ex-girlfriend, who is now reportedly engaged to Zoe Kravitz. “We had the most wonderful relationship. Very sweet, very beautiful, really very homely, sweet and wonderful,” she recalled on the podcast. “We existed in this little bubble, and it was a miracle that the ruling didn’t actually put us in that bubble.”

Styles released Kiss All the Time, his fourth album since his Don’t Worry Darling days. “Disco Occasionary” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in March. He is currently on tour in support of the project. Wilde is also working hard on his work, directing and co-starring in The Invite, which opens in theaters on June 26th.
