Lil Nas X has returned to social media with a video update to fans about his mental health and plans for new music.
The Instagram clip, posted on Wednesday (June 17), begins with the singer and rapper walking into the frame and gushing about how “awkward” it is to have himself photographed so quickly, but then says he “really wanted to talk to you guys.”
“First of all, where have I been? I was in rehab for a few months, and I’ve been back home ever since. Whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with friends… I’m just trying to ground myself and get out of my head,” said the musician, standing outside against a mostly clear blue sky.
“I have a therapist and a psychiatrist now. It’s really helping me,” he continued. “When I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I feel like I’ve known for a few years now, but I didn’t want to admit it because I didn’t want to take the medication and…I don’t know, I didn’t want people to think of me differently. I mean, I’m already black and gay. I’m like, ‘Damn, God. Come on.'” Black, gay, bipolar — I live my life in extremely hard mode. ”
Still laughing at himself, the hitmaker continued, “Seriously,” he’s “getting a lot better.”
“I’m free to create,” he added. “There is less fear in my heart and I am just smelling the roses.”
Lil Nas finished by marveling at how he’s been making music for seven years already and teasing that he’s preparing to release even more. “I want to let everyone know that new music is on the way,” he said. “We’re not quite there yet, but I’m excited to be and excited to be on this journey, this next chapter with you guys. S–t. We’ve been through so much together, and thank you guys for putting up with me. I love you guys, and all I want to do is keep trying to make you guys proud.”
The statement comes after a trying year for Lil Nas, who was arrested last year on suspicion of assaulting a police officer in Los Angeles and was ordered by a judge in April to complete a two-year mental health treatment plan. Officers were responding to reports of the musician walking around in public wearing only underwear and cowboy boots, after which he spent the weekend in custody.
He later pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault and one count of resisting arrest, but the charges will be dropped if he completes a treatment plan.
Lil Nas last released music in March 2025, when he released the EP Days Before Dreamboy. His 2021 LP Montero reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
