England fans serenaded their team with an epic singalong to Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ on Wednesday (18 June) after a thrilling win in the opening game of the FIFA World Cup. England began their FIFA World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas, Texas, winning the game 4-2 to take first place in their group ahead of Ghana, who also won their opening game against Panama.
The match was one of the strongest performances of the opening round of the tournament, with Harry Kane scoring two goals in addition to goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. England led twice in the first half but equalized with great goals from Croatia’s Martin Baturina and Petar Moussa.
After the match, the England team was serenaded with Oasis’ 1995 song ‘Wonderwall’, with players Anthony Gordon, Bellingham and Kane showing emotional expressions, and the Three Lions supporters roared back the song.
The clip, shared by BBC Sport on Instagram, was reposted on both Oasis and Liam Gallagher’s main social accounts. Take a look here.
Oasis’ ties to football run deep, with both Gallagher brothers being keen supporters of local team Manchester City FC.
England’s official anthem for the 2026 tournament has yet to be announced, but supporters have revived a number of old classics associated with the team, including Lightning Seeds and Badeel & Skinner’s ‘Three Lions’, Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ and Gala’s ‘Freed From Desire’. England’s in-stadium goal music for this tournament, played after each score, was Planet Funk’s ‘Chase The Sun’, a song made famous during England’s rowdy darts tournaments.
England’s next match is against Ghana in Boston on Tuesday (23 June) before moving to the New Jersey Stadium in New York to conclude next Saturday’s Group L match against Panama.
