Justin Carey, longtime bassist for Sixpence None the Richer, has died. He was 50 years old.
According to a GoFundMe campaign set up to support Sixpence None the Richer singer Leigh Nash and the musician and his wife Linda, Carey recently suffered a stroke and passed away on Thursday (June 18).
“To say we had a really great time is an understatement. Thank you, Justin,” Nash wrote on Instagram alongside a throwback photo of himself and Kaley. “We love you forever. Please keep his dear Linda close to your heart. She is our family. There was never anyone like Justin.”
“Justin passed away peacefully this morning, Linda by his side,” a statement on the GoFundMe page said. “Please continue to pray for strength during this very difficult time.”
The fundraiser said Carey had “suffered a severe stroke” in recent days and was being treated at Albany Medical Center in New York.
Earlier this week, Nash encouraged fans to support the band members by visiting their GoFundMe page.
“We love our brother so much. Words can’t express it. I know so many people out there love him too,” she wrote on Instagram. “I saw his talent. His unparalleled professionalism, class, humor (oh, humor), witty, and tough as old boots. There were so many other adjectives to describe him. Please pray for Justin and Linda.”
Sixpence None the Richer was formed in 1992, and Cary joined the band in 1997, replacing former bassist JJ Placencio. That same year, the group released a self-titled album that included the breakthrough hit “Kiss Me.” The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
In addition to his work with Sixpence None the Richer, Cary played bass with numerous artists and bands including Counting Crows, Jennifer Knapp and Lee Brice, according to his website.
