On Saturday (June 20), Ed Sheeran brought his eclectic, energetic, heartfelt, pop-leaning brand of singer-songwriter to one of music’s songwriting capitals, Nashville, on the second North American leg of his global headlining Loop Tour.
Fittingly, the four-time Grammy winner’s more than two-hour show at Nissan Stadium was chock-full of his signature hits. But on the Loop Tour, Sheeran’s solo stadium shows used live audio loops in place of a full band, weaving together looped instrumentals, rhythms and layered vocal harmonies to build the songs’ sonic tapestry, giving fans a glimpse into the process behind constructing his hits, including Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping songs “Perfect” and “Shape of You” in the process.
“I always feel like I’m coming home when I play here,” Sheeran said of Nashville, noting that he’s not only played at Nashville venues like Nissan Stadium and Ryman Auditorium, but also lived there briefly, including in 2013 at a home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Many songwriting sessions in the Nashville area at the time influenced his 2014 album x (‘Multiply’). Of course, his ties to Nashville run deep and include collaborations over the years with Megan Moloney, Luke Combs, and Taylor Swift.
Just before Sheeran took the stage on Saturday night, an image of the cassette mixtape was shown on a giant screen with a message encouraging fans to register to request songs for that night’s setlist. In addition to scheduled songs such as “Give Me Love,” “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud,” Sheeran’s set also included fan requests such as “A Little More,” “Dive” and “Supermarket Flowers.”
Throughout the set, which was frequently punctuated by intense pyro and fireworks, Sheeran shuttled between the main stage and a smaller B stage, connecting the two stages using a retractable bridge above the audience. He also surprised fans with guest appearances from traditional Irish folk band Beoga and country duo Dan + Shay (Sheeran said his friendship with Dan + Shay goes back over a decade when they wrote songs together).
Sheeran’s Nashville show featured opening sets from Miles Smith, Ambre, and Aaron Lowe. The trek will visit many more cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Boston.
