Lizzo believes Taylor Swift is 100% superior when it comes to developing a fan base. During a guest appearance on an episode of the Proto Pop web series posted on Sunday (June 28), the Yitty founder praised the pop superstar for making community the cornerstone of his career.
In a conversation with influencer Swiftologist aka Zachary Hourihane, Lizzo talked about how she’s redefining what’s most important in her music career. Instead of focusing on commercial success or appealing to a large audience, “now it’s like, who is my fan base? Who is my community? Who am I talking to?” she says.
“I’m talking to Rizbians,” the hitmaker continued about her new approach. “I talk to my guys and I always talk about Taylor’s accomplishments. She’s been doing it for a very long time.”
In fact, Swift has been known to have a strong bond with her fans from the beginning, holding free handshakes with fans after performances on her first five tours, interacting with fans on social media, and at one point even handing out Christmas presents she’d chosen for them. “I think it was very genius and very smart,” Rizzo added. “I don’t even know if she had the foresight to do it. I think she just built it organically, and now she has her own community around her that supports her.”
Her remarks about the benefits of prioritizing a devoted fan base over the general public’s opinion came as part of a broader conversation Lizzo and Hourihane had about the state of pop music. This episode came shortly after she released her latest album, Bitch, which did not chart on the Billboard 200 or enter the Billboard Hot 100.
“I got depressed and thought, ‘Oh, okay, this isn’t what I expected,'” Lizzo candidly said about Bitch’s performance. “I didn’t think it was going to be crazy, but I didn’t think it was going to turn out like this. There was a time in my life where I was basing my success and my worth on numbers for about 24 hours. I think it was soul-crushing.”
That’s why it’s more important than ever for her to remember whose opinion matters most: Rizbian.
