NBA legend Charles Barkley has revealed that he turned down an invitation to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s star-studded wedding.
Many professional athletes and several sports broadcasters were also in attendance, so Barkley would have been able to fit right in at the wedding, which took place on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, even though he only met Swift once.
Sir Charles joined the Unfiltered With Ricky Bo & Bill Colarulo podcast on Tuesday’s (July 7) episode, where he spoke about why he turned down the invitation.
“I don’t go to weddings or funerals,” Barclay said. “But I did get an invite, but I politely declined because I thought it would be a shitty show. I love Travis and Jason, and I’ve only met Taylor once, but I did get an invite.”
The 63-year-old continued to say he wanted to hang out and play golf, but was grateful the A-list couple thought of him when it came time to send out invitations. “But I said, ‘That’s too much.’ I just want to hang out and play golf, I don’t want to dress up or anything like that,” he added. “But I’m grateful for the invitation. It was very special.”
Ryan Seacrest revealed that Barkley was not the only person who was invited but did not attend. Barkley was also scheduled to attend, but had to bail because Disney had asked him to host the 250th anniversary celebrations on July 4th.
The lavish wedding reportedly had a guest list of over 1,000 people. Celebrities in attendance included Jack Antonoff, Dakota Johnson, Mariska Hargitay, Tate McRae, Camila Cabello, Ed Sheeran, Jessica Alba, Gracie Abrams, Gigi Hadid, Sabrina Carpenter, Maren Morris, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Paul McCartney, Tom Brady, Jason Sudeikis, Chris Rock and many more.
Adam Sandler served as master of ceremonies, and Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks performed at the reception.
