Podcast ‘Cult of Kobe’ launches with Celtics coach as debut guest
A new podcast called “Cult of Kobe,” in which each episode will be a conversation with a notable figure inspired by the late Kobe Bryant, made a cheeky choice for its launch guest: Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla.
Recall that Bryant considered his seven-game series victory over the Celtics in the 2010 NBA Finals the high mark of his career. “It meant everything. That’s the ultimate one… It’s sweet because it’s them,” Bryant once said.
“Cult of Kobe” — which launches this week — is being produced by Religion of Sports, the Marina Del Rey-based company founded by Tom Brady, Michael Strahan and Gotham Chopra, who will co-host the series with Varun Soni, the dean of Religion and University Chaplain at USC.
Chopra directed the 2015 documentary “Kobe Bryant’s Muse” for Showtime. The early guest list for “Cult of Kobe” will include Jon Bon Jovi, Jaylen Brown, author JR Mohringer, “Men in Blazers” podcast host Roger Bennett and Brady.
Religion of Sports’ previous credits include the acclaimed HBO series “Alex vs ARod,” the Paramount+ series “5 Star” and “Made for March,” Netflix’s “Simone Biles Rising” and Amazon’s “Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues,” among others.
