Olivia Rodrigo has finally released her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, proving once again that she’s the queen of moody love songs.
The pop star’s new LP arrived on Friday (June 12) and features 13 songs that explore the range of romantic love, from the initial rush of a honeymoon to the creeping uncertainty and the tidal wave of emotion that hits you after it’s over. It’s been three years since she last released an album — 2023’s Guts topped the Billboard 200 — and even longer since she first perfected the art of capturing the emotional swings of love with her debut LP, Sour.
“I’ve found that all my favorite romantic love songs are beautiful because they have shades of fear and longing in them,” she said in an interview with British Vogue at the beginning of “You Seem Pretty Sad.” “I felt the same way about falling in love. The moment I get into a really great relationship, I’ll start feeling good about myself and it’ll fall into place. But it just doesn’t work that way.”
LP fans’ first taste was lead single “Drop Dead,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, followed by “The Cure.” She also previewed “Begged” on Saturday Night Live in May and debuted “What’s Wrong With Me” live with collaborator Robert Smith at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound.
Rodrigo is now gearing up to support the project and will begin his Unraveled tour in September. The arena run is scheduled to run across North America and Europe until May next year.
