dance music’s most famous cat lover, deadmau5, has donated $30,000 to help 27 rescue cats.
On May 27, the Oakville Milton and Halton Humane Society in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, posted that they had rescued 27 cats from a nearby home. None of the animals, aged 3 months to 3 years, had ever been seen by a veterinarian. The organization is asking the community to help raise $30,000 to cover the cost of admission testing, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping and ongoing care to prepare the dog for adoption.
In the comment section, Deadmau5, who does charity work with the Toronto Humane Society and has three rescue cats himself, suddenly showed up a few days later and simply wrote, “I caught him!”
“We had many memorable moments at the shelter, but opening Instagram and finding a message from deadmau5 was definitely a moment we never saw coming,” HSOMH Executive Director Jeff Ballentine told Billboard in a statement. “We are extremely grateful for his generosity and, just as importantly, for the awareness he brings to our shelter and the animals in our care. It is rare and meaningful when someone with such a large platform chooses to shine a light on animal welfare and help more people understand the work we do every day.”
The goodwill continued when the producer posted on his Instagram Stories on Monday (June 8), “Help us name 27 cats! And find them forever homes,” along with a link to a page where fellow cat lovers can suggest names, and notes that the names will be ultimately decided by a vote.
Valentin said deadmau5’s support “will make a huge difference to these cats and kittens, but the conversations and engagement that followed have been just as valuable. I’m especially excited that deadmau5 asked fans to help name the 27 cats and kittens. This is a fun way to bring people into their story, and I can’t wait to see what names they come up with.”
The Grammy-nominated musician took action to help nearly 30 cats in late May, but his philanthropic efforts for the cat world didn’t end there. Deadmau5 opened the Reverb Shop on June 2nd, stocking music equipment, tour posters, merchandise, and more in time for Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Toronto Cat Rescue, a no-kill non-profit rescue organization.
