Duran Duran has been working magic with Nile Rodgers for over 40 years. Their combined winning streak (the band first topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984) continues through 2026 with the lush dance-funk of Duran Duran’s “Free to Love” featuring Nile Rodgers.
On Friday (June 26), the British band will release Free to Love: Hot Star Remixes, featuring eight versions of the enthusiastically received song. “Sometimes a song simply asks for a remix, and we have no choice but to comply. This was certainly the case with ‘Free To Love,'” the band’s Nick Rhodes explained in a statement. “We wanted to collaborate with the best modern remixer possible, something we haven’t done in a long time. It was a leap of faith and we had no idea what the interpretation of our song would be, but we couldn’t be more excited with the result.”
One of those remixes comes courtesy of Trixie Mattel, the joke-telling, guitar-strumming drag queen who won RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars in 2018 and established herself as a DJ and remixer during the pandemic.
“You’re so bold to put your own spin on this track!” Mattel says of remixing the new single from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during Pride Month. “Slightly higher BPM, more cosmic disco fantasy, and thick, nasty bass. I strongly believe that anything can be made more appealing.”
Free to Love: Hot Star Remixes (pre-save here) also includes improved versions of “Free to Love” by Horse Meat Disco, Harrison, and more.
“It’s been really interesting to work with dance music artists from different genres and see how their approach to our songs changes. With music, you can keep it locked in your own room, or you can open up the doors of the entire hotel and see what other rooms look and sound like,” Rose said. “Personally, I’m always curious and more excited about the unknown. These remixes have been a great adventure.”
Mattel recently joined Billboard on an episode of Takes Us Out at the Donut Shop, where she talked about her DJ career and ultimately becoming Swiftie. Not long after the record’s release, Duran Duran will be headlining London’s BST Hyde Park on July 5th. See the full tracklist below.
