Taylor Swift, Haim and Mariska Hargitay showed off a little Knicks love by wearing handmade Knicks-themed t-shirts to Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday (June 10), and now its creator, Alana Haim herself, is revealing how the t-shirt came to be.
“I love making shirts for my friends,” the musician told Vogue in an interview published Thursday (June 11), admitting that he made the shirts using a Cricut he bought after HAIM’s last tour. “I figured out how to screen print and did a little setup at home. … A lot of people who DIY online love the Cricut, so I got it. I cut out the vinyl, put it on the screen, bought some screen printing paint, and applied it with a squeegee. I’ve wanted to try this inflatable additive for a long time, so I decided to use the puff paste effect on these shirts.”
The garment, revealed by the Grammy-nominated musician, was a $3 orange Gildan T-shirt called Speedball, sold at the craft store Michael’s, and printed with the fancy names “Stevie Nicks,” “Nickleback” and “Nicole Kimdan,” with a Nicks-inspired twist. Haim came up with the idea for the shirt and made it (she showed part of the process in an Instagram Stories video on Thursday), but said she didn’t come up with all the puns herself.
“I got an email from Taylor, and it was exactly what I wanted to get as an amateur screen printer. She said, ‘I want to wear this shirt to the game, can you make it for me?’ And I said, ‘I thought you’d never ask.’ This is my dream,” she told the iconic fashion magazine. “[Swift] I thought of Stevie Nicks. We were going back and forth about these puns. We were so excited to go to the game and really wanted to have fun because we thought it would make people laugh. ”
How did Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Olivia Benson, the star of NBC’s long-running procedural drama and namesake of one of Swift’s cats, end up sporting courtside alongside sisters Alana and Este Haim and the pop superstar at a game at New York’s Madison Square Garden? “I always bring an extra, but Taylor wanted to bring an extra to give to a friend,” Alana explained. “And Mariska was so depressed. She’s such a great human being and I’m a huge fan of hers, so the fact that she wanted to wear my shirt too was incredible. It really bonded us all together. I’ve never hugged anyone more than I did at that game.”
On June 10th, the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 with Taylor Swift cheering courtside. Game 5 will be played Saturday (June 13) at Frostbank Center in San Antonio. If the Knicks win, it will be the team’s first championship since 1973.
