When Post Malone stopped by Toronto’s Rogers Stadium on Tuesday night, June 16, he didn’t just give a shout-out to his buddy Oliver Tree. He dedicated an entire show to the late artist and poured a portion of it onto the runway.
“Tonight, for me, feels like a celebration of the life of a truly beautiful, beautiful man,” Posti said in a video filmed at the show (see below).
Fighting back tears, Malone continued, “The gentleman I knew was so beautiful and he inspired the world with his art and his heart and soul. Ladies and gentlemen, we have lost a beautiful soul named Oliver Tree.”
It was previously reported that Tree died in a helicopter crash in Brazil. He was 32 years old. The genre-blending singer, songwriter and producer was one of six people killed when two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (June 14).
Tree, whose full name is Oliver Tree Nickell, was traveling through South America as part of his first world tour.
Malone performed in Toronto to celebrate Tree, who released their fourth studio album, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, in April of this year.
“I want you to know, we love you very much. We love you brother,” Malone said. “We’d like to celebrate this gentleman and have a great evening.” After a pause, he poured the drinks onto the stage and began the beer flowing.
Born on June 29, 1993 in Santa Cruz, California, Tree began his music career in 2013 with the EP Demons. His 2016 single “When I’m Down” attracted attention, leading to a contract with Atlantic Records the following year.
His full-length albums include 2020’s Ugly Is Beautiful, 2022’s Cowboy Tears, and 2023’s Alone in a Cloud.
Known for his signature bowl hair, dark glasses, and quirky personality, Tree had hits with “Life Goes On,” which peaked at No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart in 2022, and his collaboration with Robin Schulz, “Miss You,” which peaked on Billboard’s 2022 Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
Melanie Martinez has released a statement of her own regarding Tree, whom the alt-pop singer-songwriter dated several years ago. In a post on her Instagram Story on Sunday (June 14), Martinez began by writing that she had been “absolutely devastated” since receiving the news of the fatal helicopter crash. “It’s really hard to understand how someone with whom you shared such a tangible and formative time in your life could suddenly be gone,” she said. “He was very dedicated to his art, which I really admired and admired.”
The North American leg of Posty’s Big Ass Stadium Tour concludes on Tuesday, July 28th at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, before traveling to Asia and Australia for the remainder of 2026.
