Romance and New York City serve as the twin muses behind Sam Smith’s newly announced fifth studio LP, Hazel Eyes, due out later this summer.
The vocalist and songwriter announced Wednesday (June 24) that his next album will be released on August 21 via Capitol Records. Alongside this announcement, Smith released the album’s lead single, “My Guy”. It’s a heartfelt love song inspired by the London-raised artist’s relationship and life in the Big Apple.
“This is a song I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life to write and sing,” Smith said of the soulful song. “This song, written with some beautiful friends on a summer day in New York, fell from the sky. I hope you can feel the love and intimacy of this recording in this sometimes cold and distant world. I tried to express the glow and warmth of love in this song.”
In a press release, Smith called “Hazel Eyes” one of his most personal works to date. Produced in collaboration with longtime collaborator Simon Aldred, the 12-track project also features contributions from acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Feist and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily.
“This album is an incredibly special record to me,” Smith explained. “I have been writing this album for over three years with a very small group of beautiful, dear friends. This album is very personal and I feel that through making this album, I have deepened myself as an artist by being with this record from beginning to end as a producer and pushing myself every step of the way.”
The Hazel Eyes campaign kicked off late last year with Smith’s “To Be Free” residency series, kicking off with a 24-night extravaganza at the Warsaw venue in Brooklyn, before moving to San Francisco’s Castro Theater for eight more performances. The intimate performance mixed hits from The Smiths with unreleased songs from Hazel Eyes, and featured surprise appearances from artists including Hozier, Ed Sheeran, Brandi Carlile, Sienna Spiro and Kim Petras.
Among the new songs performed during the residency were “My Guy,” co-written with Feist, the sultry “Moondance” and the country-tinged “Constant Companion.” Smith demonstrated the former during a recent appearance on Britain’s Later… with Jools Holland.
Smith’s 2014 debut, In the Lonely Hour, won four Grammy Awards, including Pop Vocal Album of the Year and Song of the Year for “Stay With Me,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. They found success in 2017 with The Thrill of It All, which reached number one on both sides of the pond, and have since released two more records. “Love Goes” and “Love Goes” in 2020, Gloria in 2023.
