The historic match between Mexico and England in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday (July 5) set social media abuzz, and the music world couldn’t help but get excited, too. Ahead of the much-awaited clash at the Estadio Ciudad de Mexico, Liam Gallagher, singer of British band Oasis, on Wednesday (July 1) predicted a landslide victory for his compatriots against the Mexican team. Mana frontman Farr Olvera responded definitively to that prediction in a video.
“The Oasis singer said Mexico would lose 5-0 to England. Now, that’s not true. Take it seriously!” Olvera, wearing a Mexican flag, said in a video posted to his Instagram account on Wednesday. “5-0? Calm down! We’ll see how it goes on Sunday, dude,” the Mexican rocker added, sparking a wave of comments and memes in support of Mana and the Mexican national team, which broke a nearly half-century drought with a 2-0 win over Ecuador in the knockout stages on Tuesday.
Previously, Gallagher had predicted an overwhelming victory for England in response to an X user who asked him how he felt about his country’s defeat in the 1986 World Cup against Argentina at the Estadio Azteca (renamed Estadio Ciudad de Mexico during the tournament).
“I think we will beat Mexico 5-0,” Gallagher wrote, sparking controversy on social media. He later clarified that it was “obviously a joke” and updated his prediction to a 3-0 win, citing the “heat and altitude” at the match venue. Fans also wondered, “What if we were 5-0?” to which Rocker cheekily responded at X, “Well, I’ll take all the credit.”
Even Mexican celebrities such as content creators and former RBD member Alfonso Herrera responded with memes to the British musician, whose band is incredibly popular and beloved in Mexico. Oasis began the Latin American leg of their reunion tour in Mexico City last September, playing two sold-out shows at Estadio GNP Seguros.
Oasis founder Gallagher and his brother Noel are known for their passion for football and are proud Manchester City fans. Meanwhile, Mana attended the 2026 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony at Estadio Ciudad de Mexico on June 11th along with Shakira, Burna Boy, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Danny Ocean, Los Azures, and Tyra.
Olvera also held a large free concert on June 17 at the Glorieta de la Minerva Monument in his hometown of Guadalajara, which drew an estimated 170,000 people, according to the state government of Jalisco. The event was held as part of the World Cup Fan Fest activities held in Guadalajara, one of the host cities of the tournament.
When the first whistle blows this Sunday, the social media controversy sparked by Gallagher and Olvera will end, and all tensions will be transferred directly to the field. Mexico has not played England in a World Cup since 1966, when they drew 1-1.
