Local favourite Tommy Paul was beaten in straight sets by former US Open Champion Danil Medvedev in 16 rounds.

Russian Danil Medvedev has been competing for runner-up finishes for the past two years, beating local hope Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-0, rocking the rain delay to reach the quarter-finals of California Indian Wells.

Taking him to court at about 10pm local time on Tuesday, four hours after he was scheduled to hold an evening session at the Stadium Court, Medvedev made the most of Paul’s 31 powerful errors.

“It wasn’t an easy preparation,” Medvedev said. “We were both here early, rain, rain, rain. I think we both went to Rusty.

Paul had his opportunity and rallied after Medvedev led 4-0 to win four consecutive games.

However, Medvedev won the following eight. I pocketed the first set with a pair of pole forehand errors before racing the second and sealed it off at the final break of the American serve.

“It’s a pretty weird score,” Medvedev said. “Everyone who won several games won in a row.”

Medvedev, who fell to Carlos Alcaraz in each of the last two finals, will then face France’s Arthur Phils.
