At Thera Week 2025 in Houston, a coalition of major energy consumers signed a groundbreaking pledge to help expand nuclear energy capabilities.

The “large energy consumer pledge,” promoted by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), is the first time a non-nuclear sector company has publicly supported the massive expansion of nuclear power generation. Target: Triple global nuclear capacity by 2050.

The Union is made up of leading global companies such as Amazon, Google, Siemens Energy and Meta.

These companies recognize nuclear energy as an important pillar of clean, reliable, and resilient power generation, essential to meeting the global escalating energy needs.

Commenting on the Landmark Initiative, Lucia Tian, head of clean energy and decarbonization technology at Google, said:

“Google will continue to work with our partners to accelerate the commercialization of advanced nuclear technologies that can provide the 24-hour clean energy needed to meet growing electricity demands around the world.”

Why it is essential to increase nuclear energy capabilities

With the global shift to net-zero carbon emissions, nuclear energy has gained traction as a reliable alternative to fossil fuels.

Unlike the intermittent sources of solar and wind, nuclear power provides a continuous and stable energy supply.

This makes it particularly valuable for industries with high energy demand, such as technology, manufacturing and transportation.

Expanding nuclear energy capabilities is also a key to energy security. Many countries rely heavily on imported fossil fuels, exposing them to price volatility and geopolitical risks.

A robust nuclear infrastructure can stabilize clean power while reducing this dependency.

“We are pleased to announce that we are a global energy company,” said Urvi Parekh, head of Meta, head of Global Energy. Nuclear energy has the ability to provide continuous power and helps to meet this growing demand.

“We look forward to being able to join us alongside this multi-organization effort, along with a triple nuclear pledge, to repeat our commitment to nuclear energy.”

Growing consensus for nuclear expansion

The Triple Nuclear Energy Capacity Initiative was first introduced at the Global Nuclear Symposium in 2023 and later gained great support at Dubai’s COP28.

By 2024, 31 countries had signed a declaration of triple nuclear energy, and over 140 nuclear industry companies had joined the industry-wide pledge.

Furthermore, 14 of the world’s largest financial institutions supported this effort, highlighting the need for equitable access to nuclear power.

At Cerawek 2025, a diverse group of energy-intensive businesses participated in the movement, recognising the role of nuclear power in achieving sustainability goals and economic growth.

These companies advocate for government support and increased investment in nuclear energy to accelerate development. The signatories of the pledge are:

The Future of Nuclear Power

Currently, nuclear power generates around 9% of the world’s electricity from 439 reactors around the world.

However, increasing demand from sectors such as data centers has made the need for expansion of nuclear capabilities more than ever before.

Companies like Amazon, which invest more than $1 billion in nuclear energy projects, are exploring advanced solutions such as small modular reactors (SMRs) to improve efficiency and scalability.

Brandon Oyer, head of American Energy and Water at Amazon Web Services, added:

“Amazon supports the World Nuclear Association’s pledge and is proud to invest more than $1 billion in nuclear projects and technology last year.

As the world moves towards a cleaner energy future, it will be important to triple our nuclear energy capabilities to ensure long-term sustainability, resilience, and energy independence.
