Harrogate Convention Center (HCC) has selected Green Circle Solutions (GCS) to calculate its initial carbon emissions report and develop a sustainability plan in line with North Yorkshire Council’s goal of becoming a net-negative carbon region by 2040.
The HCC Estate includes an auditorium with a capacity of 1,977,8 multipurpose spaces (14,000 SQM in total), and additional event spaces, including an Edwardian royal hall.
The venue was first conducted a staff travel survey using a GCS staff travel carbon calculator, measuring emissions from commuting and business travel, attracting employees and demonstrating their commitment to sustainability.
GCS helped the organization develop its initial carbon emission calculations, sustainability reports and carbon reduction plans, tailored it to Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) and the Theater Green Book.
Theatre Green Book is a sustainability initiative specifically designed for the theatre and performing arts industries.
Working towards North Yorkshire Council’s goal of becoming a net negative carbon region by 2040, HCC aims to establish long-term links with projects that neutralize the emissions footprint, such as nature-based carbon mitigation and the biodiversity net profit project.
The team is taking proactive steps while North Yorkshire Council reviews the HCC’s sustainability plan. Green Group has been established with representatives from all departments to develop environmentally friendly initiatives, encouraging all employees to provide ideas.
The HCC Technical Team has introduced battery recycling boxes at events, and an increasingly efficient heating system prevents 1,400 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
Sustainability initiatives are expanding beyond modern spaces. The Edwardian Royal Hall has a Grade A Display Energy Certificate, with LED lighting illuminating most event spaces and parking lots, offering an impressive 80% energy savings.
I am in charge of advertising the venue regarding the future of HCC.
