New AI search in Gmail now sorts emails by relevance rather than chronological order

Google is rolling out a new Gmail update designed to help you find the email you’re looking for faster. On Thursday, the company announced that it will use AI to consider factors such as remency, most clicked emails, and frequent contacts when surfing emails based on search queries.

Until now, Gmail would simply display chronological emails based on keywords.

“This update will make the email you’re looking for much more likely to be at the top of your search results. It will save you valuable time and help you find important information more easily,” he wrote in a blog post.

Google has introduced a new toggle to allow you to switch between “most relevant” or “latest” emails on your search results page. Toggles are aimed at users who prefer to see search results displayed chronologically, rather than the new “most relevant” default option.

The update is deployed globally for users with personal Google accounts and is available in the Gmail app for the web and Android and iOS. Google plans to expand its functionality to business users in the future.

The launch of the new search feature gained numerous Gmail-like features on iOS 18 last year as Google is building emails to compete better with Apple’s email app. For example, Gmail recently acquired a Gemini-driven feature that allows users to add events to Google Calendar directly from email.

A few months ago, Gmail deployed a “summary card” that lets users perform actions in their inbox, such as tracking packages, checking in flights, setting reminders, marking invoices, and more.

Gmail also introduced the ability for users to chat with Gemini about Inbox directly within both iOS and Android apps.
