Openai approaches $400 billion in ChatGpt revenue, tripled to $12.7 billion by 2025

Openai’s dominance in artificial intelligence is about to win $40 billion in trust votes. The ChatGpt maker is reportedly closed in one of the largest private funding rounds to date.

The round is led by SoftBank, and initially plans to kick $7.5 billion, followed by another $22.5 billion this year. Other supporters of the mix include Magnetor Capital, Court and Founders Fund.

“Openai is finalizing a $40 billion funding round led by SoftBank Group Corp., citing people who are familiar with the issue in a talk featuring investors such as Magneter Capital, Court Management, Founders Fund and Altimeter Capital Management.

If confirmed, the deal marks a historic milestone in private fundraising and sends a clear message that investors are still bullish on Openai’s future despite lingering questions about empty operating costs and sustainability. The company reportedly lost $5 billion in revenue in 2024 with $3.7 billion. This is primarily due to the sudden price tag of model construction and training.

Still, Openai forecasts revenue of $12.7 billion by 2025 and big $125 billion by 2029.

That optimism also relates to scale. In February, COO Brad LightCap revealed that ChatGPT currently has over 400 million active users. These numbers have not been made public until now.

Future funding will also help support Stargate, Openai’s $300 billion AI infrastructure venture with SoftBank and Oracle, which was first announced in January. The joint project aims to build large-scale computing power in the US as demand for large-scale language models continues to grow rapidly.

So, what is behind Openai’s continued rise?

CHATGPT remains an AI tool for millions of users, from developers and marketers to students and corporate teams. Consistently strong performance in industry benchmarks has helped us to stay ahead of our rivals like Humanity, Google Deepmind and Mistral.

Part of that momentum comes from word-of-mouth recruitment and deeper integration into everyday workflows. It took just five days to reach the first 1 million users since ChatGPT day, which began in late 2022, but growth has not been slow since.

Openai is releasing faster, more efficient versions of the models, such as the GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4O. Meanwhile, our deep partnership with Microsoft continues to expand its distribution, embedding Openai Tech into offices, Azure, and more.

Of course, it’s not easy to scale your company at this rate. The growing demand for infrastructure has resulted in occasional outages and user frustration. But the company has a big bet that financially and operationally, it can stay ahead.

Big question now: Is this the safest bet in technology? Or one of the boldest?
