“It was strange, man”: Zuckerberg took a Facebook employee and took him to see “social networks” when it came out

Mark Zuckerberg may not be the most likable person in Silicon Valley, but we can relate to him about this: it would really feel strange if someone made a movie about your life.

On YouTube podcasts Colin and Samir, Zuckerberg talked about the only time he saw “social networks.”

“It was strange, man,” he said. “They got all these very specific details of what I was wearing, or these specifics are correct, but then my motivation and all of these things were completely wrong.”

The 15-year-old film only appeared in conversation as he wore the T-shirt that Jesse Eisenberg wore when Zuckerberg portrayed the young founder on screen. Zuckerberg later bought a T-shirt at an auction. Zuckerberg was once known for wearing a regular grey t-shirt, but since then he has paid more attention to his style, so it’s possible that his t-shirt choice was not an accident.

Zuckerberg said he knew his employees wanted to see it anyway, so he arranged for the company to go see it with him.

“The whole arc is somehow motivated by trying to find a girlfriend. [but] I was dating Priscilla before I started on Facebook. ”

Perhaps this portrayal of Zuckerberg comes from another infamous website that he created between students: Facemash is an app that allows students to vote on which of their classmates is the hottest. The service was popular among some students, but it angered other students who felt it was a violation of their privacy. He created the site by scraping out his classmate’s student ID photos from his private server.

“It’s an unfortunate part of the internet and how people construct a lot of founding myths for what they want,” Zuckerberg said.

He denied the idea that Facebook was the predecessor of Facebook, claiming that more than 20 years later it linked Facebook with Facebook for “social networks.”

“I was just a kid,” Zuckerberg said.
