Hosting platform WordPress.com launched a new AI website builder on Wednesday, which allows users to create websites that work using an AI chat style interface. The features available for free to WordPress users are targeted at entrepreneurs, freelancers, bloggers and other other features that require a professional online presence.

At this point, AI builders cannot create more advanced websites like e-commerce stores and what others need with complex integrations.

While AI-powered website builders are no longer new, this addition is designed to make WordPress compete better with companies like Squarespace and Wix. But like most of these builders today, more advanced website editing and layout requires an understanding of site development and design tools. Over time, it can change as AIS learns from user-created edits after the initial creation.

To use the new tool, users use AI chatbots in conversation styles to design websites with their own text and images and configure the site layout.

To get started, users should first enter a prompt explaining their website ideas, such as “Build a website for a coffee shop.” The company suggests that at this prompt be as specific as possible, providing a site name and a short description, and providing information about what content the site will host.

Users then sign up or log in to a WordPress account to watch AI build a website for their website. (The company points out that this feature is only available on brand new websites.) Once the site is created, users can chat with AI to make changes. AI Builder includes 30 free prompts that users need to choose a hosting plan. These include unlimited prompts. This allows people to try out AI builders and see if they meet their needs before hosting on WordPress.com.

A hosting plan is required to get your final website to the public. These range from $48 per year for personal sites to $300 per year for business sites. Plans include set amounts of storage, free domains for a year, access to free premium themes, customer support and more. AI Builders are available with these plans at no additional charge.
