Google lays out hundreds of people on Android, Pixel and Chrome units in a strategic AI push

Alphabet’s Google has fired hundreds of employees across its major product teams (Android, pixel and chrome) as the company continues to shift its resources to its ever-growing AI initiative. The reduction in work initially reported by the information has impacted its platform and device units, indicating a deeper strategic shift within Google’s core consumer technology operations.

The latest layoffs were at the very heart of its platform and device division. These are products where billions interact every day, making it difficult to ignore movement. The report cites sources familiar with the decision.

The job cuts follow Google’s previous acquisition offer made in January to workers in the sector. Apparently the offer was just a warm-up.

“Since combining our platform and device teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more agile and operating more effectively, including job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program we offered in January,” a Google spokesman told the information.

The shifts are not happening on their own. Big Tech is competing for areas like AI infrastructure and data centers, pulling areas like AI infrastructure and data centers back from segments that once gained all their love. Last month, Business Insider reported that Amazon is preparing to cut 14,000 management roles as part of its cost-cutting plan aimed at trimming $3.5 billion annual expenses, Reuters reported.

In January, Meta let go of what they called the “lowest performers,” prompting the hiring of machine learning engineers. Microsoft cut the role of the 650 in the Xbox Division in September. Amazon has run the work across telecoms and other departments. Apple, which is normally silent during these waves, trimmed around 100 positions from the Digital Services Group last year.

Google’s cloud division was also inevitable. Bloomberg reported in February that several teams were affected but cuts were explained as limited.

This is just the latest chapter in Google’s broader workforce readjustment. In January 2023, the company significantly reduced its employment of 12,000 people. This has reached 6% of global staff. The movement sent a clear signal. The company was rethinking how it allocated people, time and capital.

Now, as AI controls internal memos and investors’ calls, it is clear how the wind is blowing.

The move will trim the workforce alongside other tech companies. LayOffs.fyi is a reduction in high-tech, reduced site tracking jobs, with 93 high-tech companies reporting that they have eliminated 23,505 jobs so far this year.
