These are important events on the 1,158th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.

This is where things stand on Sunday, April 27th.

Fineting

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed what he said was a complete failure of an attack by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of Russia after Moscow said he was expelled from the last village they held.

Valery Gerasimov, the chief of Russian general staff, confirmed for the first time that North Korean soldiers were fighting alongside Kursk’s Russian troops, praised their “courage and heroes” to help drive out the Ukrainians.

Diplomacy and politics

FSB Security Services said the suspect had detained the murder of senior Russian officer Yaroslav Moskarik in a car bomb. The Kremlin blamed Ukraine for the murder. There were no official comments from Kyiv about the attack. President Donald Trump questioned whether Putin wanted a peace deal shortly after meeting Ukrainian President Voldy Mie Zelensky at St. Peter’s Basilica before Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome. Zelenskyy said the meeting could prove historic by delivering the kind of peace he wants, and a White House spokesperson called it “very productive.” After the meeting, Trump sternly spoke to Russian leaders, writing, “There was no reason Putin would fire missiles in civilian regions, cities or towns over the past few days.” He also urged Putin to stop bombing Ukraine’s civilian regions, adding that secondary sanctions against Russia may be necessary accordingly. Following Trump’s remarks, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said the US Senate is poised to advance bipartisan laws that impose trade sanctions on countries that purchase Russian oil, gas and other products.

French President Emmanuel Macron said after a “very positive” exchange with Zelensky that Ukraine is ready for an unconditional ceasefire, and that the so-called “coalition of will” led by France and Britain is working to achieve that and achieve lasting peace in Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said he hopes Russia will show specific signs of willingness to pursue peace in Ukraine after Russia meets Zelensky in Rome.

The British government said Kiel Prime Minister Starmer and Zelensky discussed “positive progress” in ending the war in Ukraine on the sidelines of the Pope’s funeral. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has provided Zelensky with support for the EU in negotiations to end the war with Russia, adding that the Bloc “always stand by Ukraine to pursue peace.”
