Unifil said the first incident of this kind was the first since Hezbollah, an armed group of Israel and Lebanon, agreed to a ceasefire last November.

The mission said the direct fire from Israeli forces had collided with the periphery of the UN’s interim forces in peacekeeping positions in Lebanon (Unifil).

In a statement Wednesday, UNIFIL added that Tuesday’s incident was the first of its kind as Israeli and Lebanese military group Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire last November.

Unifil said one of the bases in the village of Kfalchova in southern Lebanon was attacked. There were no immediate comments from the Israeli military.

“Recently, UNIFIL has also observed other aggressive behaviors. [Israeli military] It was stated in X’s post, referring to the UN resolution adopted in 2006, which was adopted in 2006 to end hostility between Israel and Hezbollah.

UNIFIL includes the recent offensive stance of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and yesterday’s incident in which a fire broke out directly south of the village of Kfar Shouba, including yesterday’s incident involving UNIFIL officials and assets near the Blue Line.

The incident on Tuesday occurred near an unmapped boundary separating Lebanon from the height of Israeli occupying Golan, he added.

Illegal intersections of the blue line by air from land or from any side constitute a violation of Security Council resolution 1701.

Unifil cited other incidents allegedly denounced Israeli forces, including targeting lasers while patrolling with Lebanese forces in the tropical border town of Malone Al Rath on Tuesday.

“UNIFIL is all such a protest and we will continue to remind all parties of our responsibility to ensure the safety and security of our UN personnel and property, and to always respect the inviolability of our UN assets and facilities,” he added.

An unstable ceasefire

Israeli forces separately said Wednesday that they killed Hezbollah fighters on a strike in southern Lebanon.

“Early today [Wednesday], [Israeli military] “We have been attacked by the area of Qaaqaaiyet el Jisr in southern Lebanon, eliminating Hezbollah terrorists who have held the position of commander in the Kablika region within the Hezbollah terrorist organization,” the military statement said.

The November ceasefire ended a conflict in which Israel attacked Lebanon in the air, invaded the country and destroyed a vast belt in southern Lebanon. Hassan Nasrara, the longtime leader of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli attack in September.

Certain conditions require that neither Hezbollah nor other armed groups be armed in an area near the southern border of the Ritani River, which flows into the Mediterranean, about 20 km (12 miles) north of the Israeli border.

They demand that Israel withdraw troops from the South and Lebanese troops in order to deploy to border areas.

The armistice officially ended hostilities, but sporadic cross-border attacks continue. Israel regularly breaks ceasefires, raids in southern Lebanon, and has also collided with neighbourhoods in Beirut’s southern suburbs, where Hezbollah holds strong support.

Israel still occupies five strategic hills along the border. Rocket was fired by Israel from Lebanon’s territory on two separate occasions, but Hezbollah has denied any involvement.

Hezbollah leader Naim Kasem claims that the group does not hold weapons in the border zone in accordance with the ceasefire.
