Birmingham, West Midlands, was awarded the title “World Craft City” by the World Craft Council, becoming one of eight cities in Europe, retaining this title for its excellence in craftsmanship.

The World Craft City title is granted by the World Craft Council, an organization associated with UNESCO.

The announcement came on June 3, 2025, following a rigorous assessment process, including a visit from the International Review Board in April 2025.

At the heart of Birmingham’s craft qualifications is the historic Jewelry Quarter, home to over 800 companies, including over 100 professional jewellers and retailers.

According to the Birmingham City Council, the new designation paves the way for international partnerships and joint projects, benefiting not only the Jewelry Quarter, but also the wider West Midlands region.

The title is awarded to a rich craft legacy, a thriving manufacturer scene, and a place with a clear focus on keeping and advancing craft in the future. It is independently verified and peer-reviewed, making it a meaningful and reliable marker of quality.

This perception is expected to boost tourism, support local businesses and raise Birmingham’s profile at the global stage.

Cllr Saima Suleman, a Cabinet member of the Birmingham City Council for Digital, Culture, Heritage and Tourism, said the Jewelry Quarter has long been celebrated for its craftsmanship and innovation, and the designation recognizes the region’s heritage and enduring excellence.
