A significantly upgraded GigaChat large language model (LLM) featuring enhanced reasoning capabilities, will soon be launched by Sberbank, Russia’s largest lender, according to First Deputy CEO Alexander Vedyakhin.

In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Vedyakhin revealed that the new model will be capable of scientific research, marking a significant leap forward for Russian AI development.

Sberbank to Unleash Reasoning-Capable LLM, Challenging West’s AI Lead

“In the near future, we will release a new model,” Vedyakhin stated. “Our GigaChat will have reasoning functions, meaning it will be capable of scientific research. I’m already testing the beta version”.

This advancement positions GigaChat to tackle complex tasks and solve more challenging problems than previous models. Particularly in fields like science, coding, and mathematics. The move comes several months after global market leader OpenAI launched its own reasoning-capable LLM last September.

Sberbank to Launch Reasoning LLM: Implications for the Global AI Landscape

While acknowledging Russia’s six-to-nine-month lag behind US and Chinese AI leaders, Vedyakhin highlighted GigaChat’s advantages in the Russian market. He emphasized the model’s strong language adaptation and stable performance. Also reliance on domestic cloud servers as key factors attracting corporate clients.

This push by Sberbank is not without competition. Yandex, Sberbank’s main domestic rival in the AI sector, announced in May that its search engine now incorporates reasoning functionality.

However, Sberbank’s aggressive development and focus on domestic infrastructure suggest a determined effort to close the gap and establish a leading position in the Russian AI landscape.

Observers will closely watch the release of this reasoning-capable LLM as a key benchmark in Russia’s global AI competition.

The impact on Russia’s tech sector and the broader geopolitical landscape of AI development remains uncertain.
