Password management from the Authenticator app

Microsoft has said it has stopped supporting passwords for the Authenticator app from August 1, 2025.

According to the company, the change is part of an effort to streamline Autofill for its two-factor authentication (2FA) app.

“From July 2025, Authill features will no longer work, and passwords will no longer be accessible to Authenticators from August 2025,” said Microsoft Authenticator’s support document.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft has already removed the ability to add or import new passwords to apps from last month. However, the option to save passwords via Autofill will continue to work in July.

However, this feature has not been completely eliminated. Instead, the saved passwords and addresses will now be synced with the user’s Microsoft account and can be accessed via the Edge web browser by setting it as the default AutoFill provider.

“From August 2025 onwards, stored passwords will no longer be accessible to the Authenticator, and generated passwords that are not stored will be deleted,” Redmond said.

Another important aspect to note is that no changes apply to PassKeys. Users with PassKeys enabled in their Microsoft account must enable Authenticator as the PassKey provider. Disabling the authenticator also has the side effect of disabling PassKey.

Users who already use another password manager solution, such as Apple iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, can set it as the default Autofill provider for their mobile devices. Users can also export passwords from the Authenticator app and import them into the service of their choice.
