GMC Hummer Ev surpassed Tesla Cybertruck’s last quarter

Tesla Cybertruck sales plummeted from last year’s peak.

According to new data from Cox Automotive, Tesla sold just 4,306 Cybertrucks in the second quarter.

Both were beaten by Ford’s F-150 Lightning, becoming the best-selling electric truck in the US in the first quarter, beating CyberTruck. But even Ford’s offering is struggling. The 5,842 lightning bolts sold in the second quarter were company quarterly totals over a year.

To be fair, the GMC Hummer tally includes sales of both the pickup truck and its SUV variant, but there is little that distinguishes the two. Put another way, the SUV version of the Hummer EV is much more like a truck than a typical sports utility vehicle.

Libian also struggles with its own electric truck, the R1T. The company sold 1,752 in the previous quarter, down from 3,309 in the same period last year.

However, CyberTruck has its biggest collapse from bounty. After handing over the first few units in December 2023, the company began selling in earnest in early 2024. In the third quarter of 2024, sales rose to nearly 17,000, but fell quickly as seen in the chart above.

It’s hard to say whether that fall was due to the damages to the brand that Elon Musk was born and his involvement in the Trump administration, or the fact that CyberTruck is still far more expensive than the $40,000 price tag Tesla promised when revealing the EV in 2019.

At one point, the company predicts that it will manufacture as many as 250,000 cyber trucks per year, resulting in a huge amount of unused capacity at its Texas plant.

As Mask once said of the shiny EV, “We dug our own graves with CyberTruck.”
