Representatives from the creative industry and AI sector will form a newly formed group of experts on AI and copyright as part of the UK’s change plan.

These groups play an important role in helping drive practical and viable solutions to issues related to AI and copyright.

Consultations on the UK’s legal framework on copyright, exploring how the government can provide solutions that support both the creative and AI sectors, began last December and collected 11,500 responses.

Close cooperation on issues raised throughout the discussion is central to the government’s approach, ensuring that both sectors are not only supported by the support they need to promote further growth, but also that the UK citizens can share the success of the two sectors that are important to modern industrial strategy.

Relationship with industry representatives is important

Representatives from both the AI sector and the creative industry are extensively involved with the Minister through the consultation process.

The impact of AI and copyright

Today’s discussion shows the first of a series of planned talks. This initially focuses on the commonalities of AI’s impact, opportunities, and copyright debate. Their work will help inform the next step following the conclusion of government consultations.

“The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Peter Kyle explained: “I am determined to work together to leverage expert insights from the whole discussion to provide solutions that bring the legal clarity that our creative industry and the AI sector needs in the digital age.

“The work we’re moving forward in the coming months will allow us to work in partnerships to bring a new start to both creatives and AI developers.”

The role of AI and creative in the government’s modern industrial strategy

Both sectors are important parts of the government’s modern industrial strategy, and the AI and copyright consultations took into account a wide range of issues of copyright debate, including how right holders could better understand how AI developers use the material and how it was obtained.

“Our world-class creative industry is an important part of our economy, creating jobs and driving growth across the country. These sectors are recognized by the government as priority sectors and I am fully focused on helping them thrive,” commented Lisa Nandi, Secretary of Culture.

She added: “We have committed to ensuring a copyright system that values and protects human creativity.

The consultation also explored ways to improve access to high-quality data for AI developers, thereby strengthening their ability to innovate and promote growth.
