Humanity will strengthen limits on the use of Claude Code without telling it to users

Since Monday morning, Claude code users have been experiencing unexpectedly restrictive usage restrictions. Many of them appear to be concentrated among the large users of the service, many of which are on the $200 maximum plan.

The user is told that “Claude usage limit has been reached” and is given the time (usually within a few hours) for the limit to be reset. However, because they have not explicitly announced changes to the restrictions, many users have concluded that their subscriptions have been downgraded or their usage has been inaccurately tracked.

“The usage restrictions have been tracked and are no longer accurate,” one user complained. “There’s no way for some 30-minute requests that hit 900 messages.”

When we reached the comment, representatives of humanity confirmed the issue but refused to elaborate further. “We know that some Claude Code users are experiencing slow response times,” the representative said. “And we’re working to solve these problems.”

The change was surprising to users who were not given advance notice of the change or guidance on what to expect in the future. One user who asked not to be identified said it was impossible to proceed with his project since usage restrictions came into effect. “It just stopped our ability to make progress,” the user told TechCrunch. “I tried Gemini and You, but there’s nothing else that’s competitive with the Claude Code’s ability set.”

These issues have emerged in addition to the wider issues within Anthropic’s network. Many API users report overload errors in the same period, and the company’s status page displays six separate issues over the past four days. In particular, the network still shows 100% uptime per week.

Loading errors are common, but humanity’s new approach to usage restrictions has caused great confusion among users. Part of the confusion comes from human pricing systems and sets tier restrictions without guaranteeing a set level of access. The most expensive maximum plan, priced at $200 per month, promises a 20x usage limit for Pro subscriptions. Pro Plan offers five times the limits of free plans. However, humanity states that the limits for free users “depend on demand” and does not set absolute values. As a result, users are unable to plan usage restrictions because they have no clear idea of when their services will be restricted.

The $200 maximum plan is particularly popular among heavy users of the service, with some viewing the plan as unsustainable for humanity in the long run. The user we spoke to said that the plan often allows us to make calls of more than $1,000 per day (measured with API pricing). As a result, he was not surprised that usage restrictions were becoming more restrictive, but he hoped that the company would communicate the change more clearly.

“Just be transparent,” he said. “The lack of communication causes people to lose confidence in them.”
