Trimet Transport in Portland has announced that Oregon legislature is preparing for a series of service cuts needed to prevent it from passing House Bill 2025.
According to Roberta Altstadt, Trimet News wrote, “The failure of HB2025 will require many Oregon transit agencies, including Trimet, to maintain service levels in the coming years.”
The agency is projected to have a $300 million budget gap, forcing it to cut services from November. “We are committed to balancing our budget over three years by July 1, 2028. This means that spending is equal or less than revenue,” writes Altstadt.
The reductions will reduce services by at least 10% by the end of August 2027. “Initially, service reductions will focus on reducing bus lines’ frequencies. After that, trimet will need to eliminate bus lines and make changes to buses and maximum services.
Agents, which have risen 53% in operating expenses since 2019, are considering two options to increase revenue. There are increased fares and increased STIF pay tax. Fares increase of 20 cents is already planned for adults and 10 cents to cut fares.
