The industry’s first partnership with Energy Dome to deliver large-scale carbon-free energy by deploying commercially proven CO2 battery energy storage.

Energy Dome’s CO2 battery technology is set to be used at a low carbon rate for the grid used for Google operations.

As part of the agreement, Google has also invested heavily in Energy Dome’s business.

Electricity of energy systems

Electricity is the key to modern life and prosperity. This is increasingly relevant as energy systems are electrified and economic growth drives new electricity demands, including artificial intelligence and data center computational needs.

Solar and wind are one of the most cost-effective and quickest ways to provide capacity for your grid, but they are inflexible due to their inherent intermittentness. Long-term energy storage solves this flexibility constraint by storing solar and wind energy and sending it later if necessary.

For energy users like Google, this technology allows “company” electricity to meet demand in a reliable, clean and cost-effective way.

The new CO2 Battery Technology trading is part of the growth of the portfolio of advanced energy technologies needed to realize Google’s ambitions by 2030, operating 24/7 carbon-free energy.

Energy Dome’s proven, market-ready CO2 battery technology choice reflects the scale, speed and ability to deploy on a global basis at the required scale, speed and affordable prices.

Benefits of CO2 battery technology in the Energy Dome

CO2 batteries can ship energy continuously for 8-24 hours, releasing solid enough power to meet both the baseload and flexibility requirements of large energy users.

Modular, site-independent product design utilizes off-the-shelf equipment to eliminate supply chain bottlenecks and ensure a highly scalable solution to efficiently and cost-effectively store huge amounts of energy.

Furthermore, the mechanical components of the technology help stabilize the grid by providing natural inertia from the rotating machinery. This is especially important given the simultaneous sun and wind ramp-up (lack of inertia) with the ramp-down of legacy fossil fuel fuel stations where inertia is lost when plants are abolished.

Therefore, CO2 batteries contribute to maintaining the elasticity of the grid by acting as a shock absorber to smooth out sudden changes in frequency.

Expand technology to achieve carbon-free energy goals

The Commercial Agreement aims to develop CO2 battery projects in all major geographical strategic areas, including Europe, the US and Asia-Pacific, with the goal of expanding deployment at a rapid pace to meet Google’s 2030 carbon-free energy target.

The site and project pipeline is identified in partnerships currently in the development and contract phase.

Maud Texier, director of Google’s EMEA Energy, explained: “Google is committed to driving business with clean energy, and Energy Dome’s technically proven scalable long-term energy storage solution will help unlock rapid advancements.

“By helping to expand this similar LDES technology, we want to help the community gain greater access to reliable, affordable power and the resilience of the support grid as they integrate more renewable energy sources.”

Claudio Spadacini, founder and CEO of Energy Dome, added:

“We are proving that a cost-effective, carbon-free energy supply, 24/7, is achievable with the right technology and partnership models.”
