Proton, a privacy-centric productivity tool company, today released a new Authenticator app, allowing users to log in to their services using dynamically generated two-factor authentication codes.

Starting today, free apps are available on all platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, Linux and more. This app allows users to sync code and accounts across devices. The company said, like its other products, Proton Authenticator is open source and uses end-to-end encryption to protect user data.

Users can easily import login codes from other authentication apps, the company said. Additionally, the app automatically backs up your code and works without having to connect to the internet.

“Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone, not just for privacy-conscious people. Proton authentication is built for those who want a secure, transparent and convenient way to protect their accounts.”

“We believe strong security should not be at the expense of your convenience or privacy. That’s why we’ve developed a Proton authentication machine to reassure the mind that users can use the 2FA code wherever they need it, without relying on Google or Microsoft. It’s a way for users to access their online accounts as well as having a strong control over their data.

Two-factor authentication using the app provides users with an additional layer of security to prevent attackers from taking over their account. SMS-based two-factor authentication is another option, but is often vulnerable to SIM swapping attacks that allow attackers to intercept calls and messages.

Protons release products. Earlier this week, the company launched a privacy-focused AI chatbot named Lumo.
