UK Government announces eligible vehicles for electric vehicle grants

The UK government today announced its first eligible vehicle model for the electric vehicle grant, allowing drivers to save £1,500 with the new EV.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced that electric vehicle grants will be used to enjoy discounts on four Citroënë-C3, Y-C4, ë-C5 and E-Berlingo models.

The discount will automatically apply to vehicle purchases and customers do not need to complete the documents.

The model was first approved for discounts under the government’s new £650 million scheme, and will continue to cut prices for new electric vehicles as more models are approved in the coming days and weeks.

Benefits of electric vehicle subsidies for businesses and drivers

ECG offers automakers the opportunity to apply discounts at the point of sale of new eligible EVs measured against the highest manufacturing sustainability standards.

The grant will help automakers increase sales, create jobs and drive investments in the face of headwinds in the global economy.

As many drivers cite prepaid costs as an important barrier to buying EVs, discounts lower the prices of electric vehicles and closely match their petrol and diesel counterparts. Drivers can save up to £1,500 a year in fuel and running costs when switching to EVs.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander explained: “With the first four models being approved today and over the next few weeks, we are now able to own electric cars cheaper, easier and more realistically for thousands of people across the UK this summer.

“Once again, we stand firmly on the side of drivers and manufacturers, providing plans for change by reducing consumer costs, helping with jobs, and bringing money back into people’s pockets.”

27% increase in Parkle Charge Points

The approval of the first four models of electric vehicle subsidies comes as more than 17,300 public interest points have been added to the UK network since July 2024. This is an increase of 27% from the previous year.

Over 82,000 public ChargePoints are now available, with one ChargePoint added every 30 minutes, and on the way to more than 100,000 over the next few years, the government believes it is necessary to confidently switch infrastructure drivers.

The move follows a £633 million package in the sector to strengthen charging infrastructure across the UK, including making it easier to charge at home for people without driveways.

This helps drivers charge their home power bills and drive EVs that are only 2p 1 mile.

The future is electricity

The government is working closely with the industry to ensure drivers are able to access discounts on electric vehicle subsidies quickly. This is being made available as easily as possible by the Ministry of Transport and Tourism to publish new guidance.

In total, the government has invested £4.5 billion to turbocharge its switch to EVS, securing its UK position as a global leader in the adoption of electric vehicles.

This latest move is alongside the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, with manufacturers having to sell an increase in zero Emission Vehicles every year.
