Amid growing tensions with China, US President Donald Trump on Thursday insisted that Inter CEO Lip Beau Tang had to step down and accuse Tang of having a conflict of interest.
“Intel CEOs are very conflicted and must resign immediately. There is no other solution to this issue. Thank you for paying attention to this issue,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump did not share any evidence or details of why Tan had a conflict of interest.
Trump’s post comes after Republican Sen. Tom Cotton on Wednesday asked the Intel board about his investment and Tan’s relationship with China, raising concerns about his time-leading cadence design system, where China’s military colleges were clients.
Tan, who took over at the helm in March, focuses on improving efficiency for chipmakers who have lost their positions in companies like NVIDIA and AMD in AI chip racing. Tan has since fired thousands of staff, spiked plans for a new manufacturing plant, and tried to sell non-core subsidiaries.
In particular, Inter is a major part of the Biden administration’s Chips Act, pledging around $8 billion to establish manufacturing and packaging projects at facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio and Oregon.
Intel did not immediately return a request for comment.
