Louisiana Attorney General sues Roblox

The Louisiana Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the platform of failing to implement basic safety controls and accusing the site of making it the “best place for pedophiles.”

The lawsuit filed Thursday by Attorney General Liz Maril alleges that Roblox “continues to promote the distribution of child sexual abuse material and sexual exploitation of children in Louisiana.” It also denies the platform for not deploying basic safety controls intentionally because it protected children from predators and failed to inform parents of the risk.

Released in 2006, Roblox has 82 million active users every day. The lawsuit points out that 20% of these users are under the age of 8, while another 20% are between the ages of 9 and 12.

“The lack of Roblox safety protocols puts the safety of children in Louisiana at risk,” Murrill said in a statement. “Roblox overruns with harmful content and child predators as it prioritizes user growth, revenue and child safety. All parents need to be aware of the clear and current dangers poised by Roblox so that they can prevent them from thinking about what happens in their homes.”

According to the lawsuit, adults can pos as Roblox children, and children can bypass age requirements and access experiences for older users.

The lawsuit points to several sexually explicit experiences that have been on the platform, including “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Diddy Party,” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.”

A spokesman for Roblox said the company cannot comment on the pending lawsuit, but the platform said it “will help detect and prevent inappropriate content and behavior, including advanced technology and 24/7 human moderation.

“While there is no perfect system, Roblox implements strict technology and enforcement protection measures, including restrictions on the sharing of personal information, links and user-to-user image sharing,” the spokesman said. “The safety of our community is our number one priority.”

Last year, Roblox launched many safety measures to protect children on the platform, including banning users under the age of 13 from sending direct messages. The measure was implemented in accordance with reports that Roblox exposes younger users to dangerous risks such as grooming and explicit content.

The Murril lawsuit states that Roblox’s recent safety measures are too late and insufficient.

The lawsuit seeks permanent injunctive relief, claiming that the company has appropriate safety features and prohibits it from engaging in any activity that violates Louisiana’s Unfair Trade Practices Act.
