Linktree, a popular link-in bio service used by millions of creators and businesses, was not accessible in India for several days. The sudden loss of failure from the Indian web remains a mystery to the Australian startup itself.
Over the past week, Linktree is inaccessible in India, with several users raising the issue on X. First, TechCrunch noticed that it temporarily displayed a message suggesting that the site was blocked by the Indian government. This was then replaced by a common SSL protocol error. The Linktree app is also not accessible domestically.
Founded in 2016, Linktree became a unicorn in 2022, surpassing 50 million users in 2024. India accounts for 3.5% of global visits, or around 7.3 million people in July, making it the platform’s fifth largest market due to traffic, according to similar web data shared with TechCrunch.
Linktree co-founder and CEO Alex Zaccaria told TechCrunch that the startup is investigating the situation. However, executives did not confirm whether the startup had received communications from Indian authorities regarding the blockage.
The startup later posted to X, realising that it was out of service in India and was “investing” the issue.
As reported by daily Hindus in India, outages are not limited to specific internet service providers and appear to affect all major networks.
The US is the top market for Linktree, with 48.5 million visitors, followed by Indonesia (32.3 million), Brazil (30.8 million), and the UK (9.4 million), similar data show.
India’s Ministry of IT and Communications did not respond to emails sent over the weekend.
